more nick, this time his last recorded track before his (amitriptyline) suicide, aged just 26. as one commenter put it: the sadness in this song is the inconsolable kind, not the cathartic kind. he can barely hit the guitar notes; he's falling apart; one of the bleakest moments of the recording era.

nick drake - 1974 (rel. 1986) - time of no reply - 12 - black-eyed dog

a black-eyed dog he called at my door
a black-eyed dog he called for more

a black-eyed dog he knew my name
a black-eyed dog

i'm growing old and i wanna go home
i'm growing old and i don't wanna know

Oh baby I'm so tired....

The man from the government
The man from the tax board
The man from the public school
The man owns the golden rule
Yeah
I'm everybody's slave
I made you my slave

You said
This I do for you
If it would help
To give the world back
What it gave
Then I would
I would
I would
I would
I would for you
I would for you

You say my eyes
Are crazy eyes
Sometimes they are
And so are you

And if you wonder
What I would do
I would do
Anything
If I could
You know I would
I would
I would
I would for you

On a cobweb afternoon
In a room full of emptiness
By a freeway I confess
I was lost in the pages
Of a book full of death
Reading how we'll die alone
And if we're good we'll lay to rest
Anywhere we want to go

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone

And on my deathbed I will pray
To the gods and the angels
Like a pagan to anyone
Who will take me to Heaven
To a place I recall
I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised
The wine was bled
And there you led me on

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone

And on I read
Until the day was gone
And I sat in regret
Of all the things I've done
For all that I've blessed
And all that I've wronged
In dreams until my death
I will wander on

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone
”Like a stone” is EVERYTHING!!!!

This is not a song per se. I often find instrumentals better at conveying emotion, and this one is my favorite piece of all time.
