Thanks Marquis for posting this. You and your colleagues do something that the world at large simply don't understand or want to understand.
People have killed themselves for centuries and will continue to do so.
Anyone who has lost someone to suicide knows pain, but that doesn't give them the monopoly on the subject.
I would bet that this site has saved more lives and serious injuries (from things like botched attempts) than it has caused deaths, and I am grateful to you, the admins and the community here for the love and support we get from understanding not judging each other.
Peace friends

We have been following the story regarding one of our forum users committing suicide.

Her name was Callie Lewis.

They're using her to push censorship of this site.

There was some press surrounding this suicide and she ended up using a method that was allegedly posted on this forum and she took her own life. We gave an interview to a journalist that was going to be used to give a skewed and one-sided view of this whole issue. We anticipated the release of this "media project" and we believe that this is the result of such a project.

Instead of trying to address the problems that she had in her life; they instead want to remove any place of support for anyone that's suicidal. It makes my blood boil to hear that journalists still want to censor information when their job is to do the opposite; To report fairly and objectively, not to play the blame game. We were mentioned in a coroner's report at the end of last year with the coroner (which was biased) recommending that something is done to this very website to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport. That date has passed and no visible action has been taken. Callie's parents have hired a law firm to pursue this to no end. This leads us to the documentary about Callie being released very recently. I have not watched it yet as I haven't had the time to do so, but I assume that it's full of the same usual pro-life BS and further attempts to prevent the spread of information.

As per the usual, there's probably no discussion about how many people this forum has probably helped or perhaps saved, but only the talk about those that end up taking their lives. We believe that any individual has the right to take their own life if they so choose, but that has somehow turned into a pro-suicide position to them. They will not accept any less than the total annihilation of this website and websites like this one that does allow suicide methods to be posted. The UK government doesn't give a shit about you. Hell, hardly any government gives a shit about their citizens. Mental health treatments are a big joke almost everywhere and everyone knows this. You can take your SSRI's but if your life situation is still shit; They don't mean anything. Therapy is a joke. Anything else isn't worth giving a mention because it's either ineffective or doesn't work.

There are even mentions in the news from Callie's parents or someone representing them about this site selling goods directly to people to kill themselves. That accusation is simply false and doesn't take long to verify. We should ask why these "journalists" run with this maliciously false information and the editors that allow this bullshit in the first place. There are other claims such as people encouraging people to kill themselves here - which is blatantly false especially in Callie's case. I'm pretty sure they would have pulled posts from here if this was even remotely true.

These people believe that censoring the information is the solution but the fact of the matter is that most of the information posted here is easily found elsewhere on the internet. They'll never prevail with censorship and we will fight every one of their attempts to do so, even if that means having to take drastic measures to do so. We will fight hard to preserve freedom of information and speech.

To end this, I want to present the words of Callie herself. These are the final words that were posted on her Tumblr blog right before she took her own life and it's something that her parents should read and take to heart.
Sadly, I think her parents and most of the world will blame the SS forum and believe that the "toxic" people on this forum planted these thoughts in her mind.
I joined this forum thinking that I wasn't going to live to see my 26th birthday, but after arranging to meet with my SS bestie @Kikoo Loool for the first time IRL, I'm now actually determined to live past my 26th birthday. The irony.

Same, I wanted to be dead by the end of the holidays last year; I actually was on domperidone three days out from the 27th. Somehow I managed to get through it all and this forum played a huge part in me not feeling totally and utterly alone with these thoughts, alienated from friends whom I can't talk to it about (who literally told me it's "killing their vibe") family who wouldn't ever understand, professionals who have year long waiting lists and to whom you can't disclose your true intentions anyways; I wouldn't even know how to stay sane without a place like this.

So get this BBC, if you're even reading this. Probably off to the next easy headline anyway.

I can totally understand how when someone kills themself, we want to look for BLAME. We want someone or something to ANSWER, and it seems like her parents want us to be that answer. It's hard to think rationally when someone commits suicide. But... this site is a mix of helping people find peace and sometimes saving people. I hope that they find a better answer.

Does anyone know where we would go if this website was shut down...?
What I find very telling is how her friends Jan says at one point in the interview: "She either had to live or die, so it was easy: she had to live."

She had to live! See... What do you think, how does that feel to a person who sees themselves as an autonomous, free person?

Also they say Callie felt betrayed by her friend. Are they implying that she falsely felt betrayed? Of course she felt betrayed! She disclosed an immensely burdensome inner struggle to her best friend who then proceeded to call the authorities on her so she can be institutionalized. Smh

-----------

The father: "The truth is not something which hurts."

Well, let's hope he can keep his delusions going strong!!

----------------

Wow. They are so oblivious. They don't give a fuck about her, all they are able to see is their own pain; it is their own pain in losing her that matters, and that's why her suicide has to be prevented. "There's always a solution." Oh okay... Like locking people up and sedating them, taking their freedom from them just so that some dipshit oblivious egotistical parents won't have to finally see through their own denial? Just so that they don't have feel bad, feel a fraction of the suffering that their daughter went through?

She must suffer so they can continue living in their rose coloured world.

---------------

So, what was the "harmful content" they kept talking about? All they quoted was someone saying "May you be at peace" and someone telling her how to interact with institutional powers who were trying to forcibly detain her against her will. Wow if that's harmful content... And that's the best they could find?
Can I get this hung up on my wall? You're speaking so many true things i've tried to articulate.

There is a subreddit called Timetogo or something similar. It's quarantined but you can still post there.

Quarentined? What do you mean?
Controversial areas of reddit are hidden from regular searches, won’t ever show up on the front page, and a few other restrictions.

It’s essentially the step before a subreddit gets banished

good thing that nobody killed themselves before the internet was invented right guys?

seriously, i already knew more than enough enough about suicide methods before i joined this forum, the only new thing that i found in this forum is a loving and welcoming community that helped me more than any psychologist or psychiatrist in more than 15 years of pointless therapies and harmful drugs.
if someone wants to die then they will find a way, it doesn't matter how hard you try to hide or censor this knowledge, someone will find it or try to experiment themselves, but in the mind of these fucking people it's better to end up crippled for life after and unsuccessful attempt than to simply dying and stop suffering for good.

besides, why are people so entitled to the lives of other people? callie was an adult and she had the right to make a decision, i'm sure that she was already sure of that decision way before she even knew of this site.

but off curse, this was everyone's fault beside the parents. apparently the medical system failed them, the internet groomed their child into suicide and no one could help them with their struggles. i'm not saying bullshit... but fucking bullshit, i know that grieving is hard and all, but why do parents always need to crusade against everything in the world when it's clear that there were other factors involved?
always pointing fingers at others but never at themselves.

Marquis, it's probably a good idea not to give interviews, because no matter what you say, they will indeed spin it in a way to make SS look like the bad guys.

I also concur about governments not giving a shit about it's people, irregardless of which nation. Government is simply a machine that serves the ruling class, all of whom would just assume be rid of us plebs anyway.

And journalists are a fucking joke. It's not a real job—just glorified parrots.

I didn't realize there was a documentary about Callie. Is it web based or strictly via British television?

Thanks. I took a look, the presentation criticizes the NHS as well as SS. It blames the system for allowing her to fall through the cracks, which to me is disconcerting, because the common response to this is more hardcore statist control over people. Such outcry could result in a future where the 'mental health' department has draconian power to throw anyone in a loony bin and keep them there indefinitely, and the implications of that alone is cause for concern e.g.: manual labor enslavement—maybe the prisoners will get to make designer shoes for a posh brand.

BTW @Marquis did you keep a copy of the original interview? Of course they took your words out of context, so maybe you might consider posting the un-edited version on the forum?

What we can read online it's really defamatory towards this site and users, and as really ignorant people as they are, they only see what's convenient for them.
By just being in front page you see a 'recovery' forum. And just by reading everywhere their sneaky slanderous statements will be easily denied.

About media, they don't care nothing about her, they just need something new to create chaos and make as much noise as possible, no matter if they are supporting the truth or not.

Unfortunately for us we are the counterpart of a pathetic, hypocrite society system based on moral and shallow common thinking with the society's purpose being to conform everyone and punish those who think outside their schemes.

Doctors and health professionals are the first being brainwashed during their 'education' process. Everyone ends up thinking in the same acceptable pattern, because so was written in 'papers', and that's why they end up failing with helping others, they can't see further than a protocol for uniform action.

About her being still alive if suicide forums didn't existed, well, it's easy recognizable that often it's just easier to blame others.

Prolife agenda is more important than the suicidee's suffering.
In their view it's not even real suffering: all or nearly all suicides are due to mental illness so basically imaginary suffering. Otherwise they would at least support euthanasia for long-lasting, incurable mental illness.

Make no mistake about it: we're all whackjobs and dangerous lunatics in their eyes whom they'd just love to force to undergo their Inquisition process of psychiatric conversion. All that is needed to make the suicidal see straight is civil commitment (psychiatric incarceration), forced drugging (poisoning, physical and mental abuse) and talk therapy (indoctrination, brainwashing).

Thank you for writing this, and I hope you and others keep fighting for places like this as a safe haven for those in pain. A suicidal person will go through with their plan 1 way or another. No one should be forced to exist, medicated, and locked up in a prison of their own body and mind, much less some state controlled psych ward.

Mental illness might not kill a person, but it can make life hell, especially in a world that is only designed for "normal" people.

This site has probably saved a lot of people, and at the very worst only provided information that is available in many other places including books sold on Amazon. Information that was used so a person that was already going to find a way to end their life anyway, could do so in a more comfortable and peaceful way.

Hanging , shooting yourself, Jumping in front of a bus or off a bridge are certainly no secret.

I do not think this site can ever be shut down, at least in United States, it would be in direct conflict with our bill of rights and freedom of speech.

I personally came to this site having already made the decision to ctb.
This site has in NO way whatsoever encouraged, coaxed, coerced or suggested for me to end my life, if anything it’s the opposite. People that don’t consider suicide would not actively seek a site such as this in my opinion.
I wanted to seek information on how I can end my life (previous attempts) with dignity and as peacefully as possible if anything to spare my family and friends a little of the pain of me passing in a more brutal fashion.

It is your choice and your moral right as far as I'm concerned. I think it's laudable to want to die with dignity and prepare a peaceful exit, both for oneself and others. Obviously this should not be construed as encouragement: I can't and won't be the judge on someone-else's quality of life and decisions.

Absolutely. I avidly agree with the point that’s been made for rational ending of life without the assumption that I am not of sound mind. Why should I be pressured into living an existence that no longer provides me with pleasure or hope?! I will not be forced to live for another potentially 30 years, the thought of that fills me with utter dread.

The problem is that the Constitution has become mere words on paper anymore. So there is really nothing to prevent the site from getting blocked if the system really wanted it shut down.

what the f... is wrong with society. They were not able to help her since she was 7 years and now they are blaming this website. There are million people committing suicide every year without any access to information from this site. Instead of solving the root causes of suicide, society started to invent medicine for mental illness which only increases the desire to commit suicide. If the person feels unbearable to stay alive what is the need to keep him alive. Everyone dies today or tomorrow. What advantage is that going to add to the earth if he stay for one more year? In my opinion humans have far less dignity to die than all living things.

I know that my thoughts will mirror so many others here but I feel the need to share my opinion and speak directly to any government body, lawyer or friends /relatives that are within the group that class themselves as pro -life advocates.

I have read this thread and tried to refrain from passing comment however there are some important points that need to be made for you (pro lifers ) to enable you to come from that high ground where you are sat and see the bigger and realistic picture.

I intend no disrespect when I say that the reaction expressed and abuse towards this website is not an isolated incident and Callie's death will not be the last death to provoke this aftermath that stems from the families grief and feelings of guilt and denial.
Loosing a child must be the most painful form of grief and realistically an event in which parents may never recover.
I am a mum myself and can only imagine.
I am a long standing member of this forum,as you can see from the number of messages and length of time here.I have been to the very edge of life multiple times and this forum and its members (past and present) have walked this path with me.
You may ask - why have I not been successfull ? and it is a combination of things.
The first being my son but in those true moments of a crisis , I have come here and shared my darkest thoughts with members who are understanding, non judgemental and acepting of my situation .Mental health professionals would have had me hospitialised and a constant drain to the NHS.
Callie seemed to be a smart girl who was both intelligent and determinded. Her feelings of not belonging in this world must have been frustrating.
I am of the opinion that her determination in life carried her through to her death.
I am sincerely sorry for your loss but
This witch hunt against the site is futile and will only take away a support platform for many people.
I think it is important to read Callie's last words and accept and respect her decision.
Sometimes there is no more help that can be given and I believe any decision to commit suicide is not a decision taken lightly.
I can fully understand that anger and blame are natural reactions but the truth of the matter is that Callie would have found a way to take her own life with or without this site.
These are harsh words to hear I know but they are the truth .

There is NO ONE to talk to about this subject. Family and friends if people have any, cannot be expected to understand, acknowledge or deal with the guilt that these conversations entail. There are no mental health professionals available. I have been under mental health for over 2 years and I see NOBODY. Talk to NOBODY and at best get an answerphone message when I call the CRISIS team. WHERE are people like us able/safe to talk about such things other than here?

Yes and they want to take away the only place we can talk about Suicide away. They don't want to allow us even one website out of the billions on the internet to talk with like minded people. Why are they doing this to us people who are desperate hurting to take away the only place of solace and hope for a painless passing. I had decided to commit suicide long ago before i found this site. This website just gave me hope for a more painless passing. And i found finally somewhere where people validated some of my thoughts that i didn't hear out there in the matrix
